Written by Nancy Mitford. First English Edition. Published by Hamish Hamilton, London, 1957. Cecil Beaton dust jacket. This is the English edition, not the American. That matters as the English were favored with the attractive Cecil Beaton dust jacket. 288 pages.
Mitford followed her biography of Madame de Pompadour with a related work about Madame de Pompadour’s great friend Voltaire. Mitford’s topic is Voltaire’s complicated decade-long affair with the married Marquise de Châtelet. Mitford calls their relationship "an alliance of eagles." The Marquise was an important scientist and Voltaire’s equal in every sense. However, they also loved parties, gambling, and court intrigue, which make them a perfect subject for Nancy Mitford.
