This fabulous old train case is from the famous "City of Paris" department store in San Francisco's Union Square. The old City of Paris building was one of the finest examples of the beaux-arts style of commercial building in California. This landmark was built in 1896 and 1909, demolished by Neiman Marcus in 1981. The store's rotunda and magnificent stained-glass ceiling still remain.
The train case is very charming and perfect for display. It is made of canvas and leather and has a fancy emblem on the front that reads, "City of Paris." It measures 14" by 10" and is 7" tall. There is some damage to the interior; red nail polish stains as noted in the photos. There is a bevelled mirror inside the lid that when opened, falls out of place. The mirror is still attached. The back of the mirror is faded velvet brownish- red with a silver medalion, there is a faded pale lavender/gray satin rope around the handle with missing tassels.
Fabulous old display piece from one of the finest stores!
