Beautiful c. 1880 Victorian Italian hand-carved genuine lava cameo brooch with the most exquisite detail.
Lava cameos are classic examples of Grand Tour souvenirs from the Victorian age. During the Victorian era, wealthy families traveled throughout Europe on an extended vacation known as the Grand Tour. One popular stops on the Grand Tour was the ruins of Pompeii. As a souvenir of their travels, wealthy wanderers would often purchase lava cameos for themselves and also as gifts for loved ones back home.
This large brooch measures 2-1/2" tall by 2" wide. It is a very high relief cameo, three-dimensional, and features a gorgeous lady with sheep and an urn. The details are exquisite, down to the flowing folds of her gown and the fleece on the sheep. The metal setting is unmarked, but most likely sterling silver. There is a "c" clasp on the back. Overall excellent condition with a couple areas of wear. Stunning in person.
