Antique 19th C. Sterling Silver "Coursing Club" Award Match Safe
This is one of the most beautiful and ornate rare sterling silver repose Victorian match safes that I've ever acquired. And, it's quite special because it was used as for an award!
Dating to 1896, it is hand-inscribed, "2nd Prize, Orange Coursing Club, April 11 '96". Coursing is the sport of hunting game animals such as hares with greyhounds using sight rather than scent.
Stunning repousse work. It measures 2-3/4" tall by 1-1/2" wide. Marked "sterling" on the inside lip. Total weight is 25.3 grams.
A truly wonderful early piece of Victoriana!
