Monumental 19th Century 19" English Cycling Trophy Samovar
One of my favorite finds this year! An astounding, heavy English Victorian silver plated samovar in repousse style and presented as a cycling presentation trophy in 1891. Acquired from the UK.
The twin-handled samovar sits on an attached four-legged base and has a removable lid with a ball finial. The repousse decoration features birds within a floral design. Leaf motif on the base and finial. Simply gorgeous workmanship.
The frontal cartouche is beautifully engraved: "PRESENTED TO Mr. W.F. Oldfield, by the Members of the WEST HARTLEPOOL Y.M.C.A. CYCLING CLUB as a Token of Esteem AND IN RECOGNITION OF HIS SERVICES AS CAPTAIN. NOV. 23rd 1891".
The extraordinary piece measures 19" tall and 12-3/4" wide from handle to handle and 10-1/2" deep. It weighs over 5 pounds.
It's in superb condition and would make a spectacular centerpiece or display piece. Not only a coffee server, but a trophy! A gorgeous example of 19th century workmanship.
