Rare Antique French Palais Royal Triple Egg Mother Of Pearl Opaline Glass Scent Bottle Caddy
Extraordinary, large antique 19th century French Palais Royal triple etui perfume bottle holder. We've never seen anything like this in our travels!
This spectacular piece consists of three egg-shaped etuis cases crafted from huge mother of pearl half shells set within hinged mounts. The large pearl cases open to reveal three small white opaline scent or perfume bottles with gilt stars.
The frame is a beautiful gilt bronze dore with amazing craftsmanship consisting of leaves, embellished scrollwork, engraving, and finished off with a figural finial. It rests on a footed marble base.
The piece opens all three shells by depressing the finial at the top to reveal the compartments of bottles and pulling back up to close.
When closed it measures a generous 10" tall and the base is 6-1/2" by 6-1/2". When open, the widest dimension is 11" from shell to shell. The shells measure 4-1/2" long by 2-3/4" wide. The bottles are 3" tall.
No chips or cracks to the lovely iridescent mother of pearl shells. A couple of areas of discoloration to the bronze metalwork from age.
It is amazing that a piece this early and fragile is in near impeccable condition.
This is truly a work of art from the Palais Royal era. Astounding conversation piece!
