Victorian Gold-Filled Heart Padlock Pendant w/ Paste Stones
This rare 19th century Victorian gold-filled heart padlock is from a collection that I recently acquired. It has lovely repousse detail on the front and back, with paste stones forming a flower on the front.
The fancy padlock measures 1-5/8" tall by 1" wide. It is in good condition with small areas of verdigris commensurate with age. Total weight is 9.4 grams.
During Victorian times, heart-shaped padlocks indicated both love, and a symbol of lifelong commitment. Nowadays, they have become quite popular again. They are typically worn on watch chains as pendants or charm bracelets. People are layering chains in various lengths/sizes/metals, and adding varieties of charms and fobs. That look makes quite a statement. Or, wear solo for a more subtle look.
This 19th century padlock is a very special piece, and would look lovely on a watch chain!
