Victorian Sherman Hotel, Chicago Cigar Cutter/Oil Lamp/Ashtray
Absolutely fabulous and rare Victorian silver plate oil lamp; cigar/cigarette cutter and ashtray from the old Sherman Hotel in Chicago, Illinois.
The Hotel Sherman was built in the 1800s and and closed its door in 1973. Boasting over 1600 rooms, the Hotel Sherman was said to be the largest American hotel outside New York City.Boasting over 1600 rooms, the revamped Hotel Sherman was said to be the largest American hotel outside New York City.
This very unique piece has an oil lamp at the top that would have been used to light your cigar or cigarette. The small box one the side has a lever, that when pulled up, opens up to place your cigar or cigarette inside and cut it. The base of the piece is an ashtray.
Quite an ornate piece with fancy mounts on the base and an ornate crest on the side box. The top oil lamp is also quite fancy and includes its original glass insert.
It measures 8-3/4" tall and the base is 6-5/8" in diameter. Piece is in superb condition.
Manufactured by Reed & Barton and dates to the 19th century. Stamped, "Hotel Sherman Co".
