Hotel Bemelmans, 1946

Scarce copy of this 1946 book, Hotel Bemelmans. The author, Ludwig Bemelmans, is famous for writing the Madeline series of books. What most people don't know is that Mr. Bemelman was born in a hotel and spent a large portion of his life in hotels. This book is a collection of short stories that recount his adventures.

The time period covers the golden age of "Grand Hotels" that lasted from the first of the 20th century up to the start of World War II. The author writes about fabulous establishments where the waiters were French, the managers German, and the guests covered in furs, jewelry and snobbery.

Filled with line drawings. Pictorial dust jacket. Published by the Viking Press, 1946. 380 pages. Excellent condition with some wear to the jacket, protected in a Mylar cover.
