Rare 1909 Poodle Dog Hotel, San Francisco Serving Dish
From my personal collection, a rare silver plated serving dish from the famous Poodle Dog Hotel in San Francisco. It's a highly sought after piece--one that you never see.
The Old Poodle Dog was a legendary San Francisco French restaurant and hotel that opened during the 1849 Gold Rush as Le Poulet d'Or. Miners who couldn't pronounce the French name dubbed it the "Poodle Dog." It quickly evolved from a rugged 15-cent dining spot into a lavish, multi-story culinary institution famous for its 23-course menus, massive wine cellars, and discreet private upper-floor dining suites favored by the city's elite.
Because the establishment grew so massive and offered overnight accommodations alongside its dining services, it was frequently referred to in city directories, newspapers, and vintage post-earthquake photographs as the Old Poodle Dog Hotel & Restaurant.
This piece would have been from the newer location after the 1906 earthquake, as the piece dates to 1909.
It has polished up beautifully and has a lovely patina. With its fancy rims, it makes a fancy serving piece.
It measures 6-1/2" in diameter and stands approx. 2-1/4" tall. Excellent condition.
It is stamped, "Poodle Dog Hotel" and is manufactured by Gorham. Date mark is 1909.
A very special piece of hotel silver for your collection.
