Rare Antique New Poodle Dog Hotel, San Francisco Food Dome
This amazingly rare early 1900s food dome cover is from the New Poodle Dog restaurant/hotel in San Francisco. It is from my personal collection.
The Old Poodle Dog was a legendary San Francisco French restaurant that opened during the 1849 Gold Rush as Le Poulet d'Or. Miners who couldn't pronounce the French name dubbed it the "Poodle Dog." It quickly evolved from a rugged 15-cent dining spot into a lavish, multi-story culinary institution famous for its 23-course menus, massive wine cellars, and discreet private upper-floor dining suites favored by the city's elite.
The transition to the New Poodle Dog was triggered by the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire, which completely leveled the restaurant. In the chaotic aftermath, the original partnership fractured into competing factions. While one group opened Bergez-Frank’s Old Poodle Dogon Bush Street, a rival faction built a massive, five-story establishment at Eddy and Market Street named the New Poodle Dog. This rival venue successfully resurrected the pre-earthquake opulence;complete with private supper suites and kept the famous dining legacy alive until Prohibition forced its closure in 1922.
The dome has the name across the front in script. It's polished up beautifully by a silversmith, and has a gleaming bright patina. It measures 14-1/2" long by 9" wide and stands 8-1/2" tall.
Only one tiny ding and a scratch on the front. Manufactured by Wallace.
We've attached a photo so you can see the history.
A rare and special piece for your collection!
