Rare 1909 Antique Poodle Dog Hotel, San Francisco Footed Tray
This rare antique Poodle Dog Hotel silver plate footed tray is from my personal collection. It's a highly sought after piece--one that you never see.
The Old Poodle Dog was a legendary San Francisco French restaurant and hotel that opened during the 1849 Gold Rush as Le Poulet d'Or. Miners who couldn't pronounce the French name dubbed it the "Poodle Dog." It quickly evolved from a rugged 15-cent dining spot into a lavish, multi-story culinary institution famous for its 23-course menus, massive wine cellars, and discreet private upper-floor dining suites favored by the city's elite.
Because the establishment grew so massive and offered overnight accommodations alongside its dining services, it was frequently referred to in city directories, newspapers, and vintage post-earthquake photographs as the Old Poodle Dog Hotel & Restaurant.
This piece would have been from the newer location after the 1906 earthquake, as the piece dates to 1909.
It has the hotel's name in the center with a fancy rim around the tray.
It has polished up beautifully and has a wonderful patina.
The footed tray measures 12" in diameter and stands 3" tall. Nice condition with a ding on one of the sides. This does not detract from this show-stopping piece.
Manufactured by Gorham and stamped, "Poodle Dog Hotel". The date mark is 1909.
A spectacular piece for your collection!
